Great place! The direct road to the castle is closed for tourists cars, you have to park your car on a huge parking area nearby (5€). There are shuttle buses (1€) to access the castle. We didn't us them cs of Corona and walked the way (10 minutes). For pedestrians there is no need to follow the street, there is a stony shortcut across the forest, it starts 100 meters behind the the 'road closed' sign on the left..

Located in the Alta Murgia National Park and included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List in 1996. A stone crown resting on a hill 540 meters above sea level. The fortress was commissioned and built by Frederick II around 1240. The interior space is divided into two floors, raised with respect to the square in front of 3 and 9.5 meters respectively. Beautiful castle with a great view. Must-see if you are in the region! The inside is not too spectacular, as all rooms are empty. So if you are short on money, I would recommend seeing the castle from the outside and to enjoy the beautiful view over the landscape.

If you are a fan of the Hohenstauffen Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich II and his possessions in Sicily and Puglia, you've got to visit Castel Del Monte, the epitome of his idea of harmony, of peace, justice, and mutual understanding of religious traditions and ideologies.

Majestic and very famous Castle, symbol of Castel del Monte and of this whole area of ​​Puglia, built by Frederick II known as Barbarossa ... Majestic, and you can see it arriving here already in the distance, as it stands out on a hill among the plains below .... well organized visit, you park your car a couple of km away, and you can reach it with comfortable shuttle buses, which run throughout the opening hours at a modest price, 1 €. for round trip ... Imposing the Castle, visually it would seem indestructible, its walls seem so massive and powerful ... we did not visit the interior (I had seen it, quite bare and essential, in a documentary .. .), but only the tour outside is definitely worth a detour here for a visit, passing through Puglia .... one of the medieval wonders of our beautiful Italy.

Very nice but beware, in the Covid period the ticket can only be purchased online. I managed to get in by paying at the cashier because there was a free seat (Max 28 people). The interior is completely empty, but it remains very impressive.

This was a great place to visit. Surrounded by nature and parks. HUGE downside is that there are not English tours, but there are English audio guides and some texts inside the castle are translated. Tickets MUST BE booked online in advance since they can’t guarantee you that a place will be opened for people trying to get one at the place. Slots are limited.

In the Covid era, in order to access and visit the interior of the monument, it is necessary to book the time slot and buy the entrance ticket online. There is no ticket office on site. Be wary of tour guides who attack visitors in front of the car park. They ask for a free offer but are very persistent in convincing you to join the group and even a little rude. In addition, the parking is free and not paid as the tour guide says! However, the place is really beautiful. The monument is kept in good condition and the view is superb!

A stone crown resting on a hill 540 meters above sea level, dominating the plateau of the western Murge in Puglia. It is Castel del Monte, a fortress built by Frederick II around 1240 and listed by UNESCO The fortress was conceived according to an extreme geometric and mathematical rigor. The plant is octagonal and the number eight recurs almost obsessively: there are eight rooms on the ground floor and first floor and eight imposing towers, obviously octagonal in plan, arranged on each of the eight corners. The position of the castle is designed in such a way as to create particular effects of light and shadow at certain times of the year, such as the days of the solstice and the equinox. The entrance portal shows, from bottom to top, an arch in Arabic style, a gable in Greco-Roman style, mullioned windows in Gothic style.

Definitely beautiful monument, well preserved, one of a kind. We were there in September and the visits inside were already sold out without a reservation. So we settled for the exterior, but it was worth it all the same. The only drawback, the disproportionate price of parking to leave the car (5 euros, fixed price, to stay even 2 hours) and the paid shuttle to go up to the castle, which they could easily put free. The alternative was to put the car away for free and walk, but we had little time. Still worth the visit.

Suggestive, placed on the heights of the countryside, stands out with its very particular octagonal shape. It is good to read its history before going there or listen to one of the guides who spontaneously propose themselves upon arrival in exchange for a contribution at the discretion. Incredible gem in Puglia.

It is no coincidence, it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1996. Magnificent structure located in an enchanting place, getting there by bike is even more beautiful. The cost of entry is € 7 + € 1 presale, if you want to do the guided tour, the cost is € 5. There are parking lots everywhere, the area is also accessible for the disabled. Better to visit the place close to sunset to admire the view and the magnificent colors. In the area, there are farms and wineries

Was not able to visit it inside due to the online reservation that is required upfront. Nevertheless the architecture, the history behind it, mixed with the nature surrounding it - marvelous! Be advised that the parking is outside and from there for € 1,- per person you can take the bus that brings you within 5 minutes to the Castle. You can always take the hill by foot - depends on the day and temperature.

I went to visit it already knowing that I would not be able to enter due to severely reduced access due to Covid restrictions. No surprises, just read and document that necessary and appropriate minimum before going anywhere. I don't understand the astonishment of some other commentators. For the same reason, I also knew that the easiest thing to do for the visit, at least from the outside, would be to park at the paid parking lot downstream and pay for the convenient shuttle to go and return. This too was not difficult to discover, perhaps wanting to organize a little before going there. In spite of everything, I said, I still went to see this unique architecture of its kind and placed in a fascinating context. I think that much of the interest lies in the mystery of this enigmatic place, which still has not been revealed today among various suppositions and conjectures on the form, function and position of the manor. I think it's nice to find yourself on the hill, observe the view, the details of the castle wandering around its perimeter and the rest can be learned from any good guide in the bookshop. It would have been nice to be able to enter, of course, but perhaps, once there and already knowing that it is almost bare on the inside, it is not so fundamental. I also agree like other reviewers that, perhaps, it has exaggerated a bit with the restrictions on the visit. It seems to me that we pass from one excess to another without being able to find the right compromise. Here four cats a day are allowed to enter a very large and airy structure and with no possibility of buying a ticket on site, then the next day you go to the caves of Castellana, by definition a cramped underground place with little ventilation, and you will find the Rio Carnival with ample possibility of buying tickets on site and guided tours in the style of torçida brasileira, despite buying the coveted and "exclusive" online access seemed as difficult as grabbing the one for a visit to Castel del Monte.

Great view and interesting construction that mixes different architectural styles. The only flaw is the fairly expensive parking.

In its simplicity .... splendid ... With its grandeur and mastery, it rises over the surrounding valleys, dominating the maritime and hilly side. Simple, clean in construction, very impressive. Too bad that the visits inside can ONLY be made WITH ONLINE BOOKINGS, so today 26 August 2020 we were told at the entrance ... and a small margin of inputs is not reserved for those who ... not being aware of that information ... arrive on the spot. Considering the number of people who are in this situation .. I would say that "the communication relating to reservations" is not very clear. It can be improved!

Nice castle! Difficult to find tickets to visit insede so I recommend making a reservation online. There is a parking spot for cars just below the castle which is a little bit expensive (3 euro), so better to leave the car down and walk up enjoying the nature.

There isn't much to add to everything you find online about this one-of-a-kind wonder. However, I would like to give an information to all those who intend to visit it: you can only buy tickets online by setting a time, and you must respect that time. We arrived two and a half hours earlier for various reasons but there was no way to enter. They are immovable.

Beautiful Castle! Unfortunately we couldn’t get in as it seemed the online tickets have been sold out for a long time. It might be a glitch on their website as the staff working there kept telling us it was sold out only for a few days. A few families were not happy having driven all the way there for nothing but since the pandemic they can only allow a few dozens a day.

The location of the castle is fantastic. It is advisable to take a guided tour and online booking in this period Covid with limited access. I did not visit the interior because there were no free entrances but I found outside a very good guide Maria who with a free offer gave us an excellent introduction to the history and architecture of the castle. In the shadow of the trifora he entertained us with the history and life of Frederick II, telling us about his ability to govern with intelligence and justice. I intend to return to visit other sites in the province of Andria and Barletta, certainly relying on its preparation.

A must-see, even if only from the outside. Been wanting to go forever, and now with COVID they are letting only a few people in every hour and when I checked, it was booked for months in advance. But go anyway! 5€ to park, 1€ to bus to the Castle!

The car park below is small, dusty, crowded during visiting hours (and there are no alternatives nearby). In the current era of COVID only online ticket and 15 people visiting per time slot, so take precautions first or settle for a walk around the fortress (which still deserves), if you want to hear even a little history you will find many more guides on the spot improvised or not

I had wanted to visit it for years and the great expectation was not met. The castle is very impressive and the guides are good and competent. I recommend the guided tour because with only 5 euros of difference the experience is enriched in value. Unfortunately in this period of covid emergency, visits must be booked via the internet well in advance and unfortunately this information is only found on the specific site. The news should also be communicated to the parking lot below, too many people arrive at the castle without being aware of it and are forced to visit only outside. This is a big shame being a UNESCO heritage site.
